Mal's Picturebox and identity crisis!

I've just posted a few snapshots, taken in the garden this afternoon, on 'Mal's Picturebox' . I've been unable to identify the wildflower in the picture below and would be grateful if anyone could help. There is no basal rosette to this flower.

Malcolm,

Could it be a type of Nemophila?

Another possibility is Linum:

Silly Mal,

I am yellow splashing in a pool of white, with a stadium of precious blue admiring it all.

thanks for the suggestions Dave - what a wonderful genus Nemophila is (even though it doesn't solve my identification problem - the leaf shape and arrangement is different from what I've been able to find out!)

I'm still exploring the Linum line but I've got to admit that once again the leaf arrangement of flax flowers coming through elsewhere in the garden is rather different.

Investigations are continuing.

Thanks Tim for the succint poetic outpouring!

still pursuing the linum enquiry - seems the most promising direction!

Malcolm, another thought. Since you are a bird feeder like me, what are the chances this is something exotic brought in with the wild bird seed? I get millet and sorghum coming up all over, and peanut plants thanks to the squirrels. Some seed mixes include flaxseed.

I found this post with a photo much like yours:

It is not identified, but the photo was taken at the Chicago Botanic Gardens:

http://www.chicagobotanic.org/

Perhaps contacting them will reveal the ID. We'll get this figured out yet.

Thanks for the link Dave - certainly the flower at http://theshutterbugeye.blogspot.com/2009/10/chicago-botanical-gardens-pretty-purple.html is a "snap"!

I've found some photos of convolvulus 'blue enchantment' and they look just like this. Have I solved the mystery?

Convolvulus 'blue enchantment' looks the same to me. Is it trumpet-shaped like a morning glory?
